LYRICS
I’ve held on to this like a security blanket
I’ve held on to this so I have an excuse not to make it
I need to take a breath in and breathe out
I need to break these habits that seem to hold me down
This constant feeling of failure,
When my only real down fall is that I never try
Caught in indecision
Just can’t seem to make up my mind
Take me anywhere I need to unwind
Take me somewhere I can escape my mind
All these thoughts swirling around in my head
Unattached just trying to make it somewhere
Somewhere, Somewhere
Where will I get if I never take a risk?
Nowhere seems like a safe place to live
But a boring, uninviting one
I want to go somewhere and be inspired by someone
But I find I am paralysed
How do I get out of it this time?
This constant feeling of failure
When my only real down fall is that I never try
Caught in indecision
Just can’t seem to make up my mind
Take me anywhere I need to unwind
Take me somewhere I can escape my mind
All these thoughts swirling around in my head
Unattached just trying to make it somewhere
Somewhere, somewhere
I don’t mind
Anywhere will be fine
Maybe somewhere green
With blue water and shady trees
This constant feeling of failure
When my only real down fall is I never try
Take me anywhere I need to unwind
Take me somewhere I can escape my mind
All these thoughts swirling around in my head
Unattached just trying to make it somewhere
Somewhere, somewhere
Somewhere, somewhere

SOMEWHERE - JOURNAL ENTRY
This song was written way back in 2017. Crazy! Trying to remember where I was at that time in life - I hadn’t really gone out into the world by myself yet, I was really just getting started with my music and working away on the local gig circuit - but I also had an urge to travel and get away from that routine, to get some new inspiration and perspective. I just hadn’t quite worked up the courage to go for it yet and this song is about that internal battle., being frustrated knowing that it’s really only yourself holding you back from the things you want.
This song was definitely influenced by Gretta Ray, I’ve always been in awe at her lyricism, always using unexpected words and making them fit so beautifully together. (‘Drive’ is a perfect example) I also just love her voice and general vision and passion for her music - it’s really been inspiring to me throughout my music journey so far!
Being such a fan of Gretta’s music was actually how I found my producer Josh Barber, he produced her earlier music and while it took me some time to work up the courage - I eventually reached out to him in 2020 with some rough demos and asked if he would be interested in working with me, that’s when this whole album process began!
I don’t think the 2017 version of me writing this song would’ve imagined it would end up being produced by one of my favourite producers, one who was part of the records that inspired the song in the first place. A pinch me moment for sure!
I found a couple of voice memo snippets to share with you, the first one is an early live band jam and the second is a stripped piano jam with my friend Timothy Li (which I low key still love the vibe of, maybe I should do an acoustic version?) I sent a bunch of very rough versions of my songs like these to Josh when we started discussing what songs to record.
Signing off for this journal, chat tomorrow on track three!
In the control room at The Aviary Studios in 2021 with Josh and Fraser. Can’t believe how long my hair was then!
